Explore This Week: Learning Through Play

Students in Explore participated in board games designed to strengthen important social-emotional skills. Through friendly competition, they practiced winning and losing with grace, demonstrating fairness, showing good sportsmanship, and managing their emotions. Activities like these help students build positive relationships and develop the self-regulation skills needed both in and out of the classroom.

Exploring Cells Up Close

Students recently completed a hands-on lab comparing plant and animal cells. To begin, they prepared microscope slides using a real onion cell to represent plant cells and a cheek cell sample to represent animal cells. Using a toothpick, students carefully collected their own cheek cells and created slides for both specimens. They then observed the samples under a microscope to identify and compare the different cell structures. This interactive lab gave students a closer look at how plant and animal cells are similar and different while practicing real scientific investigation skills.

Creative Cells in Science

Students who wanted to earn extra credit in science created models of either a plant or animal cell using household items, or they made edible versions. The project was worth 50 extra credit points. The students did a terrific job with their creativity, and everyone especially enjoyed getting to eat the cakes in class!
