Health and Hygiene

Teenagers and hygiene go hand in hand! Recess, PE, sports, and movement in school are so important for mental health, metabolism, and body fitness. Starting at around 9 years of age typically, a pre-teenage body starts emitting different types of odors related to hormones. It’s a natural process! Every body is different in where and when and how they sweat. Here are some tips to help keep you feeling clean and comfortable at school:

  • If you are in any type of sports, band, color guard, physical activity, or you are just a human being…YOU. WILL. SWEAT!

  • You sweat from your armpits, your feet, your chest, your back, your face, and your groin area.

  • The BEST thing to do if you cannot shower after sweating is to use baby wipes! Scent-free, oil-free wipes are the best for your skin.

  • Re-apply deodorant after you shower or when you wipe your body down. If you are not allergic, use body spray, scented lotions, or your favorite perfume/cologne. Even if you don’t like scents, just washing the skin helps to get rid of the odor-causing bacteria.

  • Wash your hair when you shower or use a dry shampoo product to help absorb the sweat and oils in your hair.

  • Always keep an extra change of clothes with you. That includes a clean pair of underwear/bras and socks. Those specific items collect the most bacteria and the scent will linger even if you take a shower or wipe yourself down.

  • Wash your face every day with soap and water. This will keep the oil reduced and your pores clean.

  • Ladies, speak with your parent/trusted adult about your monthly hygiene! The nurse's office has supplies if needed.

  • Gentlemen, speak with your parent/trusted adult about your specific hygiene needs.

  • DRINK LOTS OF WATER!! Staying hydrated will keep your skin nice and healthy.

  • Wash your bed sheets/pillowcases at home at least weekly.

  • Use a clean towel and clean washcloth with every shower. Hanging them to dry (to reuse) could build up a fungus/mold/bacteria on the towel/washcloth and then you are reusing that on clean skin.

  • Shower or bathe every day! Morning or night doesn’t really matter as long as you are washing well and putting on clean clothes. The best advice is to shower in the morning before school/class and again at night before bed.
