Dental Education
When someone says “Go see the dentist!” What does that mean to you? Do you know what kind of dentist to see? Did you know that sometimes the word dentist can mean different things to different people? There are 12 types of Dental Specialties and 4 types of Dental Sub-specialties. So let's get educated!!
First, let’s talk about a few types of Dentists.
A Dentist is a doctor who specializes in all oral health. They have many years of education to keep your mouth as healthy as possible. To find out more about dentists, visit here.
An Orthodontist is a doctor who has extra training and specializes in teeth and jaw alignment. You can find out more information here about orthodontists.
Your dentist might refer you to someone called an Oral/Maxillofacial surgeon. These are dentists who specialize in diagnosing and treating diseases, injuries, and defects in the head, neck, face, and, jaws. They may do dental implants, wisdom teeth extractions, jaw surgery, and complicated mouth procedures. This specialty requires dental, medical, and surgical skills. You can learn about their unique skills here.
An Endodontist is a dentist that specializes in the “inside” of your tooth. They are specialists in root canals. Find out more about them here.
A Periodontist is a specialist who cares for the gums and bones that support your teeth. They diagnose and treat gum diseases as well as handle implants and tooth root scaling. This has more information about them here.
Dentists will also specialize in age groups, such as pediatrics (kids) and geriatrics (older adults).
Now, let's talk about the dental office staff. Who are YOU talking to?
Dental Secretary/Receptionist- These are the people answering the phones, scheduling appointments, and running the check-in/out at the office. They take messages and help you to get the right person to speak with. They are usually the first friendly faces (and voices) you see (and hear) at the office.
Dental Billing Specialist/Insurance- These people manage all of the financial side of dentistry. They work with insurance companies, billing, and take your payments. They may sometimes answer the receptionist's phones and help with the office responsibilities.
Dental Office Manager- This person “runs” the whole office! They usually fill in for clerical staff but, are not often trained as dental assistants or hygienists. The office manager handles the details of everyday business.
Dental Assistant- A dental assistant has basic dental training, usually through a technology program. Some have advanced or extra training. They assist with various tasks with/for the dentist, including x-rays and procedures. Training information can be found here.
Dental Hygienist- A dental hygienist requires at least an associate degree, however, a Bachelor’s Degree is preferred. They have many responsibilities and tasks associated with preventative dentistry as well as develop oral treatment plans and assess for and diagnose dental disease. They can work independently of a dentist in the dental office or side by side. For more information, click here.
So the next time you visit a dentist, ask yourself, “Who is caring for me today?”
