Within the newly offered class through Tulsa Community College, MATH1473, students explore “various topics designed to give the student an appreciation of mathematics and expose the student to mathematical problems within numerous disciplines.” During her 5th-hour quantitative reasoning class, Elizabeth Sonnenfeld teaches the students an entertaining way to connect their own lives to mathematics using deductive and inductive reasoning. After reading the popular story, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff, Sonnenfeld can help students understand deductive reasoning: making general conclusions based on statements. Students had the opportunity to create their own stories using deductive and inductive reasoning, using the words “if,” and “then,” within each statement. In one of the student’s books, titled “If You Give a Girl Running Shoes…”, the student, a runner, can connect her hobby with understanding the difference between deductive and inductive reasoning. In her lesson, Sonnenfeld has created an extremely creative way to keep students interested in mathematics and to help them understand that mathematics is present in their everyday lives.
