In Elizabeth Sonnenfeld’s classroom last week, students completed and presented what has become to be known as “The Ramp Project.” Students in her 1st, 3rd, and 7th hour class periods grouped in small groups to inspect ramps around the Collinsville High School campus to see if they meet ADA, The Americans with Disabilities Act, requirements. Requirements included 12 feet of length for every foot of height, a length of 3 feet in between the mandatory handlebars on either side of the ramp, and an unobstructed 5ft by 5ft square at both the top and bottom of the ramp. Students had 3 days to inspect, measure, find the slope of the ramp, and create a presentation board. Scott Kiker and Jeremy Hogan, along with a few others who stopped by, watched the students present their findings and had the opportunity to ask thought-provoking questions about ADA requirements, dates of installation, and the history behind our building. Students presented on the volleyball locker room ramps, the basketball locker room ramps, the choir hallway ramp, the pre-fab ramps, and the courtyard ramp, and their posters included diagrams, pictures, measurements, and personal touches. Sonnenfeld has created an interesting and fun way for the students to understand the process of finding slope as well as a history lesson about the school and ADA requirements changes.
